FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS : FAQ
These questions and Answers will help you learn more about our Surfing lessons and how our Surf school operates!
Most definitely! Encinitas offers a nice variety of different types waves where they break slow and long. Of course it does depend on the swell but Beacons beach is one of the better places in Encinitas to offer these types of waves so you can really get the “real deal” stoked surfing feeling that all surfers rave about!
We pride ourselves in using boards that are thicker and wider (Stormblades) than most other surf school’s boards so that you can maximize the potential of your lesson and get up the first day! We like to always start you on a bigger board with more flotation (most likely either an 8 or 9 footer) which is easier to stand on and then if you have success fast then go to a smaller board which will be easier to turn later. Keep in mid we sell these Stormblade boards in the Surf Shop portion of our website!
This is a great question to ask because when you get right down to it, a lot of schools will try and hire young high school students because its cost effective for them. There is nothing wrong with that whatsoever. But, we at Encinitas Surf Lessons and Surfing for Empowerment do not believe that a high schooler has the experience yet to really provide the type of surf instruction and service that we offer. We not only like to have our instructors know how to surf and teach very efficiently but really have excellent people skills as well. We go through a training process with all our instructors. We have a detailed step by step system that they go through in order to be able to answer any detailed questions by our clients and basically offer the most thorough detailed efficient lesson as possible teaching people the correct way.
Absolutely! Even though many surfers understand the basics of safety as well as the fact there there is always a trained lifeguard present, all our instructors must prove that they are CPR/AED certified. And by the way, we havent had to even use it since we have been in operation for 8 years!
We offer a low of 3:1 surfer-to-instructor ratio to ensure proper supervision, personalized service and a safe experience. Our staff makes sure that you are always paid attention to and get proper feedback for the duration of your lesson.
Absolutely! This is one thing we pride ourselves on no doubt! We are very confident in delivering a quality surf lesson where you get up (as long as you do what we say haha) as well as an extremely fun experience.
Unless you own your own wetsuit, when you take a lesson for the first time chances are your going to be using a wetsuit that someone else used recently. Many other schools do not clean or disinfect their wetsuits properly for the next guest. We soak our suits with a specific biodegradable soap that disinfects, is safe for the skin, and keeps the suits smelling nice for future customers!
Yes Absolutely! Even though it is California and the weather in the summertime can be great and hot out, sometimes the water can be slightly chilly although last year the water actually hit close to 80 degrees for a short period. Wow! In any case, its not only important that you are warm enough in the water so you are comfortable but also the wetsuit can provide a nice layer over your skin to avoid sunburn!
GRATUITIES ACCEPTED AND APPRECIATED!
Leaving a tip is a wonderful way to say thank you to your surf instructor of the day!
Southern California is known for its great, consistent weather. We can run most classes regardless of the weather. Our full-length wetsuits will help keep you warm. However, if heavy rain or stormy weather is expected, classes can be either rescheduled or cancelled.
All lessons are 2 hours long except an option for a private 90 min lesson. We know that 2 hours is the necessary amount of time needed for a proper thorough lesson!
Swimming suit, sunscreen, towel, and water will do
All lessons must canceled more than 24 hours prior to the lesson or camp. Payment will not be refunded for day of cancellations or no shows.
Yes of course! We offer discounts for packages of more than one lesson or if you bring any friends along to surf with you. We have packages of 3 and 6 lessons. Surfing is not like riding a bike so the more lessons you get (even if you try on your own inbetween) then the more of a solid foundation you will have to learn the right way and not pick up bad habits that you may not be aware of otherwise as you embark on your surfing journey!
Please arrive 15 minutes before scheduled time to ensure you get to the correct location and find parking.
